Bipolar disorder has been diagnosed and studied over a number of years and as more is learned about it, the classifications within the broader term of bipolar are narrowed. Bipolar 2 being one of these narrowing classifications that helps to identify the various types and kinds of bipolar. Bipolar 2 involves swinging from depressed to hypo manic states without entering the manic states characterized by bipolar 1 or the more widely known term manic depression. Unfortunately, this form of bipolar is not as easy to recognize as other forms. Identifying the Symptoms of Bipolar and Bipolar 2 Recognizing manic depression in general is not as difficult as recognizing the characteristics of the individual types of bipolar. In some cases, the distinctions between the various types can be subtle and hard to recognize. In order to recognize if a person is suffering from Bipolar 2 it is essential to be able to recognize another type of mild bipolar known as hypomania, which forms one of the symptom sets for this form of bipolar. A hypo manic person would experience rapid interchanges between the productive manic phase and what would be classified as normal or baseline behavior. They hardly experience depression and would rarely encounter manic episodes. People with bipolar 2 wont extend deep into the manic portion of this cycle and experience a true manic episode. Instead, the cycle will lead them back down to normal and then into a state of depression before returning to normality to fully complete the cycle. This has to be one of the main differences between bipolar manic depression and this form of bipolar. Symptoms of depression are associated with people who have bipolar 2. In some cases, they will cycle upwards rapidly to normal behavior and than into the hypo manic phase. It is usually characterized by high energy but very rarely has excessively dangerous activities. For instance, a person maybe talkative, hyper, even up to the stage of cleaning their home to an extensive degree. They may also be highly productive on a project or may even spend excessively though they rarely spend to the point of endangering finances. Treatment Options Treatment options normally are anti depressants, which on normal bipolar manic depression works well but can actually cause problems for people with other types of bipolar at the standard doses especially if antipsychotics are used however, milder doses of antidepressants or even anticonvulsants, which often have mood stabilizing properties, can provide benefit without creating negative side effects. Therapy is also recommended for individuals with Bipolar 2. Bipolar is not something you have to suffer with, there are treatment options available that can help you lead a complete and normal life. Getting diagnosed and getting help is essential to ensuring this. Many people shy away from seeking out the help of mental health professionals however, this can prevent you from leading an active and full life. Bipolar 2 and bipolar affective disorder can affect not only your home life but your ability to hold a job and provide for your family but it does not have to educated yourself and seek help in taking back your life.
