Career planning involves systematically chalking out a career plan so as to further your career interests, deciding upon long-term goals, and continuing your education. Unlike older times, careers have now become an ongoing continuous activity. One has to constantly keep learning to cope with the advances of our era. You start career planning by evaluating your mental state, attitude towards work, financial situation etc. You have to ask yourself several questions, such as are you organized, can you finish work within deadlines, do you prefer to work in a team or alone, are you more productive indoors than outdoors, do any political, spiritual and religious beliefs lead you to make related choices in your work and are you more comfortable with strict working hours than flexible timings and so on. Also, identifying what truly inspires you to do anything is important. Secondly, you have to figure out if you want to undertake a job that's already clearly defined or try something different on your own. If you already have a job offer, think about where you want to go with it, set the ultimate goals and define how to reach them. Do your own research about career development and how far you can go from where you start. Now take your research a step further. Try out an internship or a volunteer position, read books about those who have succeeded in your field, ask to shadow someone who does the job you're aspiring for. Find out what others had to do to get to where you want to be: other jobs, experience, and education. And then decide if it's something that still interests you. You can repeat this technique several times for different career prospects, but not too many though. You might fail in the first few, but you will eventually hit upon something that works for you. Additionally, you can get more information by joining preparatory courses or help groups and clubs. The beauty of this process is that you will never end up losing. You will always have a worthwhile career, and you always have the door open to go back and start all over afresh.
