Air cleaner filters are common devices used to clean and purify the air. They are commonly used to where there is need to recycle air. Their most popular use includes the removal of solid particles from the air so as to purify and clean the air. Air filters can clean the air of harmful microbes and bacteria as well as pollen mould and dust leaving the air cleaner and fresher. Gas turbine engines especially need air cleaner filters as cleaner air makes them significantly more efficient. There are many methods which are used by air cleaner filters to remove unwanted particles from the air. The most common method is to use fiber elements in the air cleaner filter to which the dust and other particulate matter will stick to thereby cleaning the air. There exist yet other intricate techniques such as the use of static electric charge. This method uses static electrical current to attract particles and dust from the air thus filtering the air. In the past there was also the use of oil bath filters but modernization and improved technology have made this redundant. Over the years major advances in fluid science has brought about major improvements in air cleaner filter technology. They come in very useful in air conditions and gas turbines, helping to improve human health. Cotton filters and paper foam filters are popular components of air filters. To ensure optimum performance of these type of air filters they should be cleaned at regular intervals and changed when due. Air filters fall under two categories based on their flammability. Class one and class two is used to describe the different classes of flammable air filters. Class one filters do not turn into fuel when in any contact with a flame and so produce small amounts of smoke when burnt. Class two filters become fuel when a flame is introduced and thus produce larger amounts of smoke when being burnt. Considerable amount of research is carried about the flammability of air filters. Air filters come in various shapes and sizes to match the flow area of air. They are prone to get clogged with dirt from the air and so they should be cleaned or changed regularly. Clogging of air filters causes impure air and reduces the free flow of air along the passages. For an engine this could mean serious drop in the performance of the engine. The size of the air filter also depends on the passage of air. There are different applications of the air filters but the most common application would be in internal combustion engines, gas turbines and air conditioners for both cars and rooms. Paper is one of the most common materials that are used for air cleaner filters in automobiles. This is mainly because they are cost effective as well as efficient. Also these are easily replaceable. Oil wetted foam elements are also known to be used as air filters in automobiles. Foam was a known choice for air cleaners in many applications before the improvement in air cleaning technology.
