How an Acne Cream Works

By: Jim Bolding

An acne cream can do a lot of things for your complexion. It can treat skin disorders with various medicinal ingredients, and it can help heal scars after a bad outbreak. An acne cream remedy can be used with oral or surgical methods as well for a well rounded approach.
A common ingredient present in a prescription acne creams is benzoyl peroxide. This increases the amount of oxygen in the pores, effectively killing the acne bacteria and clearing your skin. Over the counter acne creams containing benzoyl peroxide usually have a concentration of only 2.5%; prescription versions run up to 10% or 20%.
Benzoyl peroxide sometimes causes excessive drying of the skin; in that case a natural alternative might be better. Acne cream with tea tree oil can do the job without being as harsh on your skin. Many natural herbal remedies exist for people who can't or don't wish to use standard pharmaceuticals.
When surgery is chosen as the option to get rid of acne, treatment cream may be needed afterwards. If the sebaceous glands have been lasered, medication may be needed to cut down on pain and swelling. Fresh acne bacteria will also need to be fended off, to cut down on the chances of re-infection.
Prescription acne creams are usually full of a topical antibiotic, and designed to kill the specific bacteria acne vulgaris. They may be prescribed alone or with an oral antibiotic, and are sometimes combined with benzoyl peroxide as a combo treatment. The dangers of long term antibiotic use should be considered before committing to a program, and you should always know which strain of antibiotics you are taking.
When it comes to acne cream, an non-oily version should always be chosen - you don't want to add more oil to your skin! If you have contact allergies, test drive a smear on your arm before moving on to the more sensitive facial skin. Don't be tempted by miracle skin peels unless you want severe burns!
If acne cream treatment is to have any chance of succeeding, you have to be consistent. Follow directions, which will probably tell you to use it two to three times daily, and make sure you pack it for business trips and vacations. Try not to wear makeup while undergoing treatment for acne - it can work against you and make treatment less effective.
Depending on the severity of your outbreaks, you can decide on your best acne treatment. Prescription acne creams are sometimes a requirement for really bad infections, while all natural remedies can clear up minor ones and keep you acne free. If the side effects are worse than the acne, it's time to switch methods!
If prescription acne creams help the most, go for it; if herbal acne cream treatments soothe you, stick with that - either way, don't forget to moisturize! Drying skin out is one thing most acne cream products have in common so add a step to your routine to avoid scaling or flaking. You want your skin to look its best once you finally rid yourself of acne!
