Would you like to know a little secret? You can spend a few days in St. Augustine, Florida, have lots of fun and you won't have to break the bank. Food and lodging will have to come out of the budget first but once you have that taken care of you won't have to spend much else. There are many fun and interesting things to do or you can just relax, now that's a novel idea. *Mission Nombre de Dios (free) - This beautiful area is the location where Pedro Menendez landed in 1565 and claimed the land for Spain. His Chaplin conducted the first Catholic Mass ever held in the US shortly after landing. Just look for the 200' stainless steel cross towering above the city that marks this historic site. Be sure to visit this lovely area. *St. George Street (free) - This is one of many quaint streets in our downtown area. Old homes grace either side, some original, some restored and a few replicas. Unique shops on the street level make for fun shopping. Also located on this street are the Colonial Spanish Quarter and the Greek Shrine. *Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine (free) - This little shrine is absolutely stunning and not to be missed. You'll be amazed when you see the Byzantine style frescoes. The Shrine is dedicated to the first colony of Greek people who arrived in America in 1768. *San Sebastian Winery (free) - I know, it doesn't seem possible but there are fine wines produced right here in Florida. This local award winning winery grows several hundred acres of muscadine grapes from which they make their wine. Tours and tastings are available every day. *Trains and Trolleys - This is the way to see St. Augustine. Yes, there is a charge but I believe it is a bargain. Your tickets are valid for three days and each company will send a shuttle to pick you up, wherever you are staying, and take you back after a day of sightseeing. There are over 20 stops throughout town to step off, visit, then step back on and continue. It is also a great way to learn the history from licensed tour guides. You are certainly going to be busy and all while staying within your budget. St. Augustine Florida is the perfect place to relax and enjoy several fun filled and interesting days. Make your plans, this is a wonderful time to visit the Nation's Oldest City.
